Alvin Is Looking At You!

Here is the debut of Alvin.  Pour guy was so hungry it took no time at all for him to eat from a bottle.  Such a handsome little bull.    I am including three photos of Alvin plus a couple more of some girls.  The light colored calf is two days old and her name is Mable.  The little red colored one in the background is three days old and her name is Abbie.  Alvin will be keeping us busy for several weeks and that is OK because we are the caretakers for what God has given us.

Hope you like seeing some of our babies.

ALVIN…Stop Running!

What a way to start your morning.  We hadn’t even had a cup of coffee yet. This morning we went out and did chores between rains, at least that was our plan, and found out that one of our heifers decided to abandon her two day old baby bull.  There should be movie cameras around here when we have to start chasing and grabbing a little one.  Thank the Lord for our mini truck as we caught the calf as he was going through a third fence.  Danny put him in my lap and we put Alvin in the stock trailer.  Alvin’s mother hasn’t even looked for or called him.  I made up a bottle of calf started milk.  Danny and I have made a nice soft bed for him and  Alvin was so hungry he went for the bottle with NO problem.  Now he has a full tummy and is laying down for a nap.  With Calf Stater costing $81.00 for 50lbs. I will be feeding him until we wean him.  I hope he continues eating good and doesn’t get sick from all the running he did.  Good thing is Alvin was able to get colostrum from his mommy and that is VERY important.  Will add some pictures later.  Now for coffee.

Baby Boy Mini Album

I just completed a mini for a new baby boy.  This is actually for his grandma and grandpa to fill up with pictures and stories about their times together.  I am only showing you the spine of the mini as I have not given this to the grandma yet.  After May 26th I will add the pictures on my Mini Album page.

Ladies, don’t you remember the dandelion bouquet’s you received in those tiny hands?  Bugs, Rocks, all kinds of goodies to press and keep or maybe just take a picture with those tiny hands holding such wonderful gifts.

Hope everyone is ready for the HOT weather.  We have had a wonderful spring in our area of Missouri and have thanked God for His beauty.

                                            Bye for now,  Debi

What Is That Color?

Have you ever picked up a paint chip and just knew it was RIGHT?  Take the chip home and put it against the cabinets to make sure it will look RIGHT.   Well, it might have a little different tint now that it is under the kitchen lights, but I still think it is OK.   Time to head to Lowe’s  and have a gallon of this paint put on the shaker machine.  This paint chip is now looking different under the lights at Lowe’s.  Oh, my goodness gracious, what to do.  Have you been shopping with your husband and he tells you, “Now I am not in a rush, so get the paint YOU WANT.”  That is where I was at this point.  Just told myself to get the paint.  I really like it, really.  Now we are back home and I have taken everything off one and half walls of the kitchen and down from the 12 foot shelf we have above the four windows (I get to look out and watch the birds, cows and babies while cooking and washing dishes. Love the country).  Spring cleaning equals fun fun.  I really enjoy painting but, I DO NOT  like taping around windows and baseboards.  I have started doing that now because my hand is too shaky.   If you have a drum at your house, find it and start the drum roll because it time to open the paint, remember the RIGHT paint.  It is like looking at several shades of this color every time a different light shines on it.  Never fear!  I LIKE IT!   I know some of you can remember the Harvest Gold color from the 70′s, so you can just go there and think just a smidgen of amber and you are getting somewhere close to the color of the kitchen now.

Love changes.  Take it easy, as it is time for me to go paint some more.

First Calf of the Season

What a beautiful day to have a calf.  Jet black little heifer.  The momma cow had her right up by the barn and with the other cows looking on.  Less then five minutes after being born the baby was up and looking for something to eat.  Amazing!  I always have fun thinking of names for our baby calves and now I get to start today.  Yea!

The weather last breeding season has a lot of farmers scratching their heads and wondering when did these cows cycle.  Think we will be having an interesting season.

Oh, and guess what else Danny and I did this morning before sun up…yes, we had coffee on the back porch and listened to the spring peepers.

Until later enjoy the sun.  Debi

Just A Couple Of Projects

In an older post I was telling you that my husband and I remodeled a bedroom into a shared craft/computer–ham radio/computer room and made each of us very happy. There was one blank area on my side next to my wall cabinets that needed something so we headed to Lowe’s and came home with one 1″x 10″ board, hanging brackets, and RED paint.  Below is a picture from the past that lets you see where I am talking about.

See that blank space left of the cabinets…well, take a look now.   I love it!  Danny asked a silly question when we were putting up the top shelf, “Did we make that third shelf only so you could put that stuff up there?”, why Yes we did.  I think if I could have my family, but start over, I would have liked to go to school and be a decorator.  Would you have ever believed people could make money by going into someone’s home and rearrange stuff for a new look?  Sounds like fun to me.

I know I tease you a lot about setting on our back porch and just thanking God for the beauty of nature and drink tea so I might as well tell you that tomorrow it is going to be 70 degrees and I think that constitutes a glass of ice tea.  Hope you will be enjoying good weather also.

Weather Changes Everything

When I started this blog I planned on keeping it updated with projects I would be doing through the COLD WINTERY days…but one thing happened, we haven’t had winter yet.  One day we had about one inch of snow and it melted in the 50 degree weather the next day.   My husband and I have enjoyed winter days setting on the back porch and watching all the birds that have hung around this winter.  Danny says I am feeding at least two limits worth of Dove, counted 18 Gold Finches, Virginia Rails, Cardinals and more.  I was able to save a Mrs. Cardinal this winter.  She flew right into the back window and landed under our picnic table.  I very slowly went out and picked her up, she was dazed and her little foot clung to my finger.  I set her down in the grass and watched to see if she was going to be OK.  A little bit later she was able to fly away.  Such a delicate being.

We will be having baby calves in a couple of weeks and then through the summer.  This will call for more time on the back porch to watch the calves run and play.  Watching a calve being born, and then within minutes stand on those wobbly legs  going right where it is suppose to for milk, is amazing.  God truly made each creature smart in their own way.  We sold our big bull, as the years were telling us we needed to bring in a new blood line.  This year my bottle baby, Payday, will become a daddy to our herd.  Oh my goodness.

Guess I better go out and get some ground broke up in our garden area.  We just plant tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers and pumpkins.  We are tying a different seed this year for the pumpkins, as we keep trying to get carving pumpkins for our grandchildren and haven’t had good luck.  I end up with small pumpkins to decorate with.  Hope you are enjoying some sunshine and I will see you later.

Snow Today and Gone Tomorrow

This is what winter is about…SNOW.  The wind wasn’t too bad this morning when we did chores and the calves were glad to see us.   Lots of birds scurrying around waiting for me to top off the feeders.  I am glad we don’t have to go anywhere today. I think of our family and friends that must travel on these slick roads.  Be safe and have plenty of warm clothes on.  This snow is great for snowballs…I mean building snowmen, so hope the kids that got to stay home today are having a little fun.  Until next time, stay warm and drink some hot chocolate, with marshmallows of course.
